Design Challenge/Solution:
Seeing the crisis of waste within the fashion industry first hand, I was inspired to develop a collection of all repurposed materials that would have otherwise been disposed of. For this personal project, I challenged myself to reinvent silhouettes from pre-existing ones or conceived new ones from draping.
Collection Inspiration/Narrative:
Every person in your family tree, every person to walk the earth has gotten to see the same sun. Every generation has gotten to experience it rise and fall, constant and unchanging. I think about this every time I watch it go down — how something so arbitrary could be so inherently human.
Even though what it shines on continues to change, its nature stays the same. In other words, there will only ever be one sun. This concept shaped this collection: that a garment could see many other lives yet it itself remains the same. This is the future I hope to see in the fashion industry; one of circularity, repurposing, and regeneration. All of these pieces are made of fabrics and trims that were given a new life in structure but have remained the same in substance. As fashion and our world continue to evolve, my hope is that we will all remain slanting towards the sun.
