Design Challenge:

Design a promotional print publication to help the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum promote a collection of your choice. Assess the message, curate a selection of images, and do research to inform your design direction. Use Adobe InDesign to create a cohesive visual system of type, image and message. Consider the narrative flow and movement through the publication. Be mindful of the target audience, as well as the Cooper Hewitt’s brand identity. Design multiple iterations and refine until you have achieved dynamic layouts with good compositional balance, structure, and clear visual hierarchy.

Creative Solution:

I designed an exhibition publication to promote the Cooper Hewitt Museum’s collection titled, Scraps: Fashion, Textiles, and Creative Reuse. I began by becoming familiar with the organization, thinking about the user experience and the story I wanted to tell. I built a photo library that would support my story, and tested multiple layouts in a modular grid using the Cooper Hewitt typeface, brand assets and colors. It was important to organize and structure the information into clear groupings thinking about the beginning, middle and end. The result is a print publication which establishes a clear visual hierarchy, promotes the story and featured items, and is a welcoming read.
